Norfolk Southern Keystone Buildout

This Project involved construction of a 6-mile rail bed for the Norfolk Southern Corporation in Indiana County, PA. Its purpose was to provide a railway short-cut for transporting coal to the Keystone Power Plant by deleting many miles of rail travel required by the existing route, thereby rendering rail transportation more economical and ultimately, removing coal truck traffic from the highways and reducing the cost of transportation to the Power Plant. At $22.4 million, the Project was the largest and most complex we had ever undertaken, and the schedule was very aggressive.

• Excavation and grading of 1,426,000 CY of soil and blasted rock.
• Construction of one 5-span and one 3-span concrete bridges involving 6,730 LF of piling, 2,740 CY of concrete and 1.7 million pounds of fabricated structural steel.
• 137 acres of clearing and grubbing, including construction of a three acre wetland
• 43,000 tons of stone rip-rap,2,100 CY of shotcrete slope protection, including 925 SY of soil nail wall and 55,000 LF of rock anchors.
• 8,000 LF of drainage pipe, up to 52” diameter.
• Two twin cell and one triple-cell precast box culverts and two 24 ft. wide metal arch culverts totaling 295 LF.
